Larian Studios Reveal a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG Ever

The anticipation about The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team is likely building a real-time experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it sparked the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, branching plots, and deep class systems—qualities that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities you can achieve with a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously permissive, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in a variety of manners, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, players can anticipate more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
